On 25 May 2018 Ireland will hold a referendum to repeal the eighth amendment to the Constitution which protects the life of the unborn child.
Everyday, women travel to England to obtain a safe abortion, due to the impossibility of receiving one in Ireland. They leave their family and friends behind to undergo the procedure. Other women order pills online that are no doubt unsafe and can have disastrous effects resulting in the death of not only the fetus but also of the mother.
There are so many reasons to get an abortion, not everyone who obtains an abortion gets it because they don’t “want” the child. Some are unable to properly care for a child, others have been raped, others will die due to birth complications or pregnancy risks, others’ child will die anyway and carrying the child will put their lives at risk also. Don’t judge a woman for getting an abortion, nobody can make that choice but them.
Criminalising abortion in Ireland does not stop abortions. Voting no will not stop abortions. It only prevents safe abortions.
If you don’t agree with abortions, that is okay. But don’t take that choice away from someone else.
Please vote on the 25 May. If you’re eighteen or over please register and exercise your right to vote in the upcoming referendum.
